Here's what to expect
- Design & Sculpting:Â Designers create sketches, followed by a detailed, 3D sculpt in plasticine to define the character's form.
- Armature Building:Â Model makers engineer complex metal armatures with ball-and-socket joints, allowing for precise, poseable animation.
- Molding & Casting:Â Molds are created from the original sculpt. For, "clay" characters, the head is often cast in a special resin or left as solid clay. Bodies are frequently cast in foam latex or silicone for durability.
- Thumbiness & Texture:Â To maintain the signature handmade look, Aardman leaves subtle imperfections, such as fingerprints, on the clay surfaces.
- Costuming & Details:Â Costumes are designed to be flexible and durable, with many characters having custom-made clothing to allow movement during animation.
- Face Replacements & Mouths:Â For dialogue, many mouth shapes are created, sometimes as separate, swappable pieces, though animators frequently mold directly on the face
