Here's what to expect
  • Design & Sculpting: Designers create sketches, followed by a detailed, 3D sculpt in plasticine to define the character's form.
  • Armature Building: Model makers engineer complex metal armatures with ball-and-socket joints, allowing for precise, poseable animation.
  • Molding & Casting: Molds are created from the original sculpt. For, "clay" characters, the head is often cast in a special resin or left as solid clay. Bodies are frequently cast in foam latex or silicone for durability.
  • Thumbiness & Texture: To maintain the signature handmade look, Aardman leaves subtle imperfections, such as fingerprints, on the clay surfaces.
  • Costuming & Details: Costumes are designed to be flexible and durable, with many characters having custom-made clothing to allow movement during animation.
  • Face Replacements & Mouths: For dialogue, many mouth shapes are created, sometimes as separate, swappable pieces, though animators frequently mold directly on the face
